Nearly two decades in conservative Utah, Hooters closes its doors

SALT LAKE CITY — After opening nearly two decades ago to some controversy and a few raised eyebrows, the restaurant Hooters has apparently closed its doors in Midvale.

Utah’s Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control confirmed to FOX 13 the restaurant relinquished its liquor license, a sign that it has closed and not planning to reopen. DABC spokesman Terry Wood said Hooters had a full-service restaurant license, which allowed it to serve beer, wine and spirits as long as patrons also ordered food.

Hooters gave up the coveted liquor license in December, Wood said.

Archived reports said Hooters opened near 7200 South and State Street in 1998 to a bit of controversy. Some residents had complained of Hooters’ use of waitresses in tight tank tops and shorts to sell chicken wings in a state known for its conservative culture. The “breastaurant,” as it’s been dubbed by some, has always played off its buxom waitresses.

Hooters’ Midvale location was its only Utah restaurant. An email sent to Hooters’ corporate offices seeking comment was not immediately responded to on Tuesday. The national chain has restaurants in Colorado and a casino in Las Vegas.

MIDVALE, Utah – Officers have identified the man accused of shooting a woman at a Midvale apartment and then running from police in a semi truck.

Police said 53-year-old Michael Workman, of Greenville, South Carolina, was arrested Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities said Workman found the woman through an escort ad on backpage.com.

Michael Workman

Unified officers said the site is known as a common advertisement webpage for escort solicitation.

Officers said Workman met the victim at the Midvale apartment where they reached a $60 agreement for sexual services.

Police said, “during the exchange of services, an argument ensued where Workman demanded his money back.”

When the victim refused, Workman pulled out a gun which led to a physical altercation with Workman, the victim and victim’s boyfriend, police said.

In the process, multiple shots were fired; one hitting the woman and one brazing Workman’s finger.

According to Unified Police, Workman pistol-whipped the victim’s boyfriend and ran from the apartment.

That’s when police caught up to him in the semi truck.

During the shooting, three others were inside the apartment, two men and a 5-month-old baby.

None of them were seriously injured.

The woman remains in serious condition.

Officers said Workman was treated and released from the hospital on Tuesday night.

He has been booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on felony counts of Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Robbery, Felony Discharge of a Firearm and Sex Solicitation (misdemeanor).

Authorities said the investigation continues for the others involved.

Lockdown lifted at Hillcrest High after false report of shooting

MIDVALE, Utah - Unified Police have lifted a lockdown at Hillcrest High School after reports there were shots fired in the school's gym.

The lock downs have been lifted at all nearby Canyons School District schools as well.

The Canyons School District said authorities were called about a possible gunshot in the Hillcrest High gymnasium Wednesday morning.

"We got a call indicating that there was someone barricaded in the school," said Sheriff Jim Winder.

"The initial info was that there was a male with a gun dressed in black, with a red hat and a rifle," confirmed Lieutenant Brian Lohrke with Unified Police.

They received a report of a person with a gun in the girls' locker room, however, officers cannot find evidence to confirm that.

Officials said, "To err on the side of caution, students and teachers are in safe locations within the buildings until police can investigate."

After sweeping all the hallways and classrooms, police found no evidence of victims or a shooter. But the nearly hour-long lockdown had students sitting on the floor with their backs to the wall in classrooms, while texting their parents about what was happening inside.

"My daughter is texting me a picture of her on the floor in the classroom," said Lysa Smith, a concerned mom who rushed to the school after hearing the news. "It's not the call you want to get."

By 11 a.m. officers had concluded there was no reasonable threat and lifted the lockdown at the school, and other area schools that they had put on lockdown as a precaution.

Now, investigators turn their focus to tracing the phone calls that came in. Their hope is to track down whoever made multiple calls with false information and hold them responsible.

MIDVALE, Utah — Unified Police are looking for the suspect after a robbery at a 7-Eleven store in Midvale early Tuesday morning.

Police said the robbery happened around 1 a.m. at the 7-Eleven at 8000 S State St. According to a representative for UPD, the suspect entered the store, went around the counter and confronted a store clerk with a knife. The suspect, police said, then forced the clerk into the back room, took an undisclosed amount of money from the register and fled north.

The physical characteristics of the suspect match a robbery that we had last Tuesday at a 7-11 just a couple blocks north of here so we`re thinking, we`re leaning towards this could be the same suspect. That has not been confirmed yet," said Lt. Bill Robertson, UPD.

The suspect was described as a tall black man, who was wearing a blue jeans, gloves, a hooded sweatshirt and bandanna covering his face.

Police said a surveillance video from 7-Eleven shows the robbery. Anyone with information that may help with the investigation is asked to call Unified Police at 801-743-7000.

MIDVALE, Utah — Jadyn Slesser, 17, is in the hospital fighting for her life after she was struck by a car while in a crosswalk last week in Midvale.

She’s suffering from brain swelling, several skull fractures, broken bones, a broken tailbone and other injuries. Her family is praying she makes it through.

“It's scary. We don't know. we don't know anything. We don't know what to expect,” said Aimee Slesser, Jadyn’s mother.

Aimee has spent long nights in the hospital at her daughter's bedside.

“It's hard to come here and be in her room and see her just lay there... just lay there,” Aimee said.

It was last Thursday when Jadyn was on her way home. Surveillance shows the moments before she was hit by a car while in a crosswalk in Midvale. Her parents got the devastating news and rushed to the hospital.

“They had her on a breathing machine and hooked up to everything. She was covered in blood and her face was already swollen and bruised. She looked horrible... my baby,” Aimee said with tears in her eyes.

Doctors are working to save Jadyn, but her mother says there is a lot of uncertainty.

“They don't know if she's ever actually going to wake up and, if she does, what anything is going to be like for her,” Aimee said.

Jadyn's future was bright she had plans to graduate high school as a junior next year with the goal of going to college and becoming a doctor.

“A lot of people love her and know how amazing she is already because she is. Everybody loves Jadyn. It's hard not to,” Aimee said.

Now that Jadyn's life has changed forever her mother has this message for drivers.

“Pay attention. She was there and if that lady was paying attention she would have seen her. She wouldn't have hit my daughter and she'd be OK,” Aimee said.

Police are still investigating if the driver will face charges. Unified Police say it's likely they'll have to turn it over to the DA's office.

Now the Slesser family is flooded with medical expenses. A GoFundMe for Jadyn has been set up at: https://www.gofundme.com/help-with-medical-for-jadyn

A surveillance video (below) released late Wednesday shows the suspect dressed in a red hoodie, black jeans and black gloves. Police said the suspect is white or Hispanic and he was carrying a black plastic bag and a black handgun.

Mug shot: Zachary Joe Sandoval

MIDVALE, Utah — A Midvale man was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail Tuesday in connection with the November 2016 death of his infant son.

Zachary Joe Sandoval, 19, faces one count of murder, a first-degree felony, and three counts of child abuse, a second-degree felony.

According to a document filed Thursday in Third District Court, Sandoval and the baby’s mother took the infant son to an emergency room in Riverton in the early morning hours of November 1.

Sandoval told police he had been responsible for caring for his son that morning, saying he had been watching TV and found his son “floppy” when he went to check on him.

“He pinched [the baby], poured cold water over him and when nothing worked, Sandoval woke up [the baby’s mother]. They attempted CPR and took the baby to Riverton Hospital in their car. During the interview, both parents denied any accidents suffered by [the baby] in the last 24 hours and said the baby had been sleepy and feeling sick,” a Unified Police officer wrote in a report.

Medical staff attempted CPR and life-saving measures, the report said, but were unable to revive the baby. He was pronounced dead at 4:03 a.m.

A doctor with the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner performed an autopsy on the baby, and found neck injuries that indicated possible attempted strangulation or suffocation, the report said.

“[The baby] had suspicious bruises under his chin, on his flank, on his chest, under his clavicle, and two sets of suspicious bruises with associated bleeding under the scalp on the back of the head, as though he had been impacted with a patterned object or surface,” the report said.

The examiner also found one of the baby’s ribs and his right collarbone were fractured, the report said. The rib fracture appeared to be recent and the collarbone fracture appeared to be weeks old.

Furthermore, the report said, the examiner found “old and new subdural blood in the infant’s head, and an opthalmic pathologist found retinal hemorrhages and macular folds in both eyes, along with optic nerve bleeding in both optic nerves.

The injuries, the examiners concluded, were consistent with non-accidental trauma. They found the baby’s cause of death to be blunt force injuries to the head with associated trauma to the torso, and the manner of death was homicide, the report said.

The court document indicates Sandoval is also facing charges of aggravated assault and sexual exploitation of a minor in separate, pending cases.

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah - Two people are in police custody after two car chases across two cities.

Officers said they tried to stop a car at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday in South Salt Lake but the vehicle sped off.

An officer got the license plate number and used it to track down the car in Midvale near 72nd S. and 7th E. just before 9 p.m.

The car led officers on a chase again; police put out spike strips, taking out three of the car's tires.

The suspect drove through the Union Plaza apartment complex, and almost hit children who were outside, before the chase ended.

"I mean it went through my neighbors' patio; if they would've been sitting on the patio, I`m pretty sure the car would've hit them," witness Christina Falkenrath said. "That is not OK, especially when minors are involved. I mean, these are neighbor kids that I`ve loved and I`ve cared for. It`s not OK."

Police identified the driver as 24-year-old Cesar Garza who has several felony warrants.

Suspect in Springville stabbing in custody after SWAT responds in Midvale

MIDVALE – A suspect in an attempted homicide is in custody after a SWAT standoff that went on for several hours in Midvale Sunday.

Residents in the area of 8200 South 245 West were asked to shelter in place as SWAT responded Sunday morning, and around 2:25 p.m. police confirmed the suspect is in custody.

“Once we discovered the suspect was in the home, we learned he was barricading himself in and he had threatened to not come out,” Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera said. “He wanted police to shoot him.”

Authorities provided a booking photo of the suspect, identified as Andrew Revan Holloway, from a previous arrest. Authorities say he has numerous prior arrests.

Residents who were asked to remain in their homes are now free to move about as normal.

According to Unified Police, they believe the suspect was involved earlier in a stabbing around 6:10 a.m. in Springville and fled the scene. They located his vehicle parked in front of a church at 8200 South 245 West and proceeded to call in a K9 unit and SWAT team.

The church was originally under lockdown, but after police secured the scene people inside were released to return home.

Police negotiators and members of the suspect’s family tried to encourage him to come out peacefully. They believed he was armed and dangerous.

“Negotiations were working for a little while,” Sheriff Rivera said. “We did have some family members on scene. However, he stopped communication and that’s when we had to use some tactical devices to encourage him to come out.”

Sheriff Rivera said the suspect suffered a bite wound from a K9 during the arrest, but the wound is not serious. The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment.

“Whenever we call out our tactical team, we never know what direction it’s going to go in,” Sheriff Rivera said. “Whenever we can apprehend somebody safely, that makes us feel good about our tactics.”

Fox 13 spoke with Lt. Foster Warren with the Springville Police Department, who told us the name of the suspect is Andrew Holloway. They say Holloway stabbed a Springville man multiple times in the face and head, and once in the chest, before escaping.

Lt. Warren says the dispute began Saturday night around 10:45 p.m. in Springville when they received a call from a woman stating her ex-boyfriend, Andrew Holloway, was chasing her and her boyfriend as they drove towards their house.

Springville police say they believed Holloway later slashed the tires and broke the windows of the current boyfriend’s truck. When police arrived he had already fled, however they discovered that he had violated a protective order against the female victim.

Sunday morning around 6:00 a.m. the woman told police that, after locking all the doors the night prior, someone was in the home. The male victim went to confront Holloway when he was stabbed repeatedly in the ensuing fight.

Springville police believe that Holloway forced his entry into the home.

While police were en route they say they received a report of the victim being stabbed repeatedly.

The male victim was transported to a hospital with serious stab wounds, it is unknown if they were life-threatening.

The male victim’s wounds to his face required stitches, said Lt. Warren.

Police say the male victim wrestled away the knife during the fight, that’s when Holloway fled the scene. Police confirm that they have acquired the knife as evidence.
